Pearce Statement on Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

Statement

Date: March 16, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

Congressman Pearce issued the following statement after President Obama announced his nomination of D.C. Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court:

"While I am sure Judge Garland is a qualified and competent judge, we should not let President Obama decide who will fill the shoes of the late Justice Scalia. Just as the President has the Constitutional authority to make a nomination, the Senate also has the authority to decide whether to confirm the nominee. The next Justice could dramatically change the direction of the Court. I support Senate Majority Leader McConnell's position that this decision should be made by the next President - something the American people must be mindful of as they make their decision in November," said Congressman Pearce.
