Rep. Trott's Statement on Passage of the SAFE Act

Statement

Date: Nov. 19, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Dave Trott (MI-11) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act:

"My number one priority is protecting American citizens. I've said all along that any refugee coming into the United States must be subject to the highest levels of security screening.

Americans deserve to know that our security is not being put at risk by the President's resettlement program. It's time President Obama puts the security of our nation ahead of his plans for Syrian resettlement and passage of the SAFE Act today is the first step," said Rep. Trott, Michigan's only member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The bipartisan SAFE Act pauses admission of refugees from Iraq and Syria, requires an extensive background check for every refugee, and a certification that each is not a threat to the security of the United States. Rep. Trott voted in support of the SAFE Act, which passed the House of Representatives by a bipartisan vote of 289 to 137.
