Congressman Rubén Hinojosa Statement on the Sixth Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act

Statement

Date: March 23, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) stated the following on the sixth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act:

"Today marks six years since the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Prior to ACA's passage, insurance companies could deny Americans coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition and charge cost-sharing for women's preventative health services.

"Our nation's health care landscape has changed dramatically in such a short time. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 20 million previously uninsured Americans now have access to quality, affordable coverage.

"I am a proud supporter of ACA and have worked tirelessly to facilitate health insurance education and enrollment events throughout South Texas. Currently close to 200,000 South Texas families receive tax credits to help pay for health insurance coverage. Unfortunately, Texas is one of 19 states that have yet to expand its Medicaid program -- a key provision of ACA. We must continue to push our state officials to expand Medicaid in order to provide coverage to over 1.1 million Texans who would qualify for the expanded coverage and sadly remain uninsured.

"Looking forward, Congress and state governments must support the Affordable Care Act and strengthen its provisions. We must come together so all Americans will continue to have access to quality, affordable coverage."
