Reid Statement On Anaconda Pit Superfund Designation

Statement

Date: March 29, 2016
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Issues: Environment

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement after Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval concurred with the EPA's proposal to designate the Anaconda Copper Pit on the Superfund National Priority List:

"Governor Sandoval made the right decision in concurring with this important designation. Thanks to this action, Nevada is finally on its way to putting Yerington's toxic Anaconda Copper Pit in its rearview mirror.

"For decades, this mining site has sat as an abandoned cesspool of toxic substances. The federal government repeatedly offered its help while the state, under multiple administrations, resisted. I've long called for Nevada to concur with this designation, and I applaud Governor Sandoval for taking this significant step.

"The designation will expedite a cleanup process that will protect the health of nearby residents and remove the environmental risks posed by the site. Lyon County can now begin planning a sound economic future and move on from this large, poisonous burden.

"The next step to ensure a full cleanup is for Nevada's congressional delegation to work together ‎to support strong funding for priority Superfund cleanups. I look forward to working with the delegation to finally get this done."
