Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton Praising Today's Lincoln-Grassley Compromise

Date: June 5, 2003

This is a victory for the 12 million children left out of the Administration's tax plan and great news for more than 423,000 families in New York. The Senate did the right thing in passing the Lincoln-Grassley compromise. It showed that our priorities are in order and that tax relief that leaves out millions working families isn't tax relief-it's unfair. I am proud that we were able to work in a bipartisan manner to fix this problem.

But whether or not these checks arrive at the nearly 6.5 million households across the country is up to the two other houses: The White House and the House of Representative. The President has until June 23rd to sign this bill into law to guarantee that the checks are in fact in the mail. And that is why I am calling on the House to pass this bill without further delay.
