REP. GOHMERT STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROTECTING THE FLAG
June 22, 2005

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert (TX-01) today issued the following statement after the House passed H.J. Res. 10, which proposes an amendment to the Constitution that would authorize the Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States:

"The American flag is an enduring symbol of liberty, democracy, and justice. It is fitting that the House act to protect it as we approach our nation's birthday, and as our men and women in uniform rally behind it around the world.

"Our flag honors those who have fought to protect it, and is a reminder of the sacrifice of our nation's founders and heroes. As the ultimate icon of America's storied history, the Stars and Stripes represents the very best of this nation."

In order to be enacted into law, H.J. Res. 10 will also have to be adopted by a two-thirds majority in the Senate, and then ratified by three-fourths of America's state legislatures.
