Quigley Statement on Syrian Refugee Bill

Statement

Date: Nov. 19, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), released the following statement in response to H.R. 4038, which provides legislation to amend the U.S. refugee admission process:

"Americans are understandably concerned about their safety following Friday's attacks in Paris, especially since ISIS has promised the same violence here. In response to the growing threat, we must ensure that our screening procedures for anyone coming to this country, including refugees, are as strong and secure as possible. But effectively ending the U.S. refugee resettlement program for both Syria and Iraq -- as the so-called "American SAFE Act of 2015' would do -- distracts from the real threats facing this country and does little to enhance America's security. We are capable of protecting the American people from terrorist attacks and providing refuge for some of the world's most vulnerable populations at the same time. In this trying time, we need to rededicate ourselves to the values and ideals that make our country great and focus our efforts and resources on the strategies that keep Americans safe."
