Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Statement

Date: Jan. 22, 2016
Location: Newnan, GA

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling of the controversial Roe v. Wade case. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional for a state to ban abortions -- except to save the life of the mother -- and that states could only enact abortion regulations that affected the mother's health in the second and third trimester. On this somber anniversary, Rep. Westmoreland issued the following statement:

"According to National Right to Life, 58,586,256 abortions have been performed in America since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. That is over 58 million children who never had a chance at life. Over 58 million babies whose fate was decided before they could speak for themselves. Over 58 million babies who were denied the opportunity to grow up, go to school, make friends, fall in love, and have families of their own. Being born into this world shouldn't be a choice made for you -- it is a fundamental right.

"As a father of three and a grandfather of seven, I am blessed to have a healthy and happy family. My children and grandchildren are my greatest blessings and I know that their life -- and all life -- began at conception. ALL life is precious and ALL life is a gift. I will continue to fight to protect the sanctity of life and give a voice to the voiceless."
