Scalise Statement on Supreme Court Nominee

Statement

Date: March 16, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding President Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States:

"The future of the Supreme Court should be decided by the American people rather than a president in his final 'lame duck' year. It's as simple as that. Just as Leader McConnell and Chairman Grassley respect President Obama's constitutional authority to make a nomination, President Obama should acknowledge 84 years of Senate history, in which a Supreme Court Justice has not been both nominated and confirmed in a presidential election year to a vacancy made in that same election year. I stand with my Senate colleagues who recognize that a lifetime appointment is too important to be rammed through in a president's final months in office; it should be decided by the American people."
