Congressman Alan Lowenthal today issued the following statement regarding the United States Supreme Court Decision to stay the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPAs) Clean Power Plan:

"I am deeply troubled by the Supreme Court's decision, but I am optimistic that the Clean Power Plan will ultimately be upheld.

"I am concerned that this ruling will significantly and unnecessarily delay the full implementation of the Clean Power Plan.

"Carbon pollution threatens the health of our children, the strength of our economy, and the security of our nation. We can no longer turn a blind eye to the reality and severity of the climate crisis. We are already far behind in tackling this urgent issue. Inaction is not part of the solution.

"The longer we wait the more expensive it will be to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and the less chance we have of keeping the world's warming below a safe threshold. Yesterday's Supreme Court decision only highlights Congress' inaction on the issue of climate change, as well as the immediate and pressing need for action.
"The Clean Power Plan is critical to our future and offers a genuine opportunity to reduce our carbon emissions, to protect the public, and take needed action on climate change."
