Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement announcing the Army Corps of Engineers is budgeting $3.9 million for major projects designed to protect Nevadans from flooding. This includes $1.75 million for the Truckee Meadows Flood Control Project for the Reno-Sparks area and $2.135 million for the Tropicana-Flamingo Washes Project in Clark County. The funding for the Truckee Meadows Flood Control Project will go toward preconstruction, engineering and design, while the funding for the Tropicana-Flamingo Washes are for repairs to the existing project.
"Nevada is known for its dry heat and arid environment, but rare and intense thunderstorms can create dangerous flash floods. These flash floods can cause millions of dollars in property damage, take lives in a matter of seconds and cause serious damage to our economy," said Senator Reid. "I thank Assistant Secretary of the Army Jo-Ellen Darcy for working with me on these important projects."
The Army Corps of Engineers projects will benefit Nevadans in the northern and southern portions of the state.
"The Reno-Sparks area has a history of devastating floods, and I have worked to ensure its homeowners and businesses have the protection and support they deserve," said Senator Reid. "I remain committed to investing in the critical infrastructure needed to not only improve safety, but protect the environment and the Truckee River, which is one of Nevada's most important natural resources."
In Clark County, the funding will go toward repairing a segment of the Tropicana-Flamingo Washes Project that was damaged by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Norbert in 2014.
"The Tropicana-Flamingo Washes play an important role in protecting the Las Vegas area from flooding, and these repairs are needed to ensure the safety of people, homes and businesses," said Senator Reid. "I will continue working to secure vital federal investments to maintain and improve infrastructure critical to the Silver State's economy."
