Washington, DC Shooting

Statement

It is with a sad heart that I reflect on the shooting today at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. My prayers and thoughts go out to the families of the victims and to the survivors that are still recovering in local hospitals and to their families. This is such a senseless tragedy. When I was in the Navy, I always thought of the men and women that worked at Naval Sea Systems Command as being such a vital part of our quest to bring an end to the Cold War. Under Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, they were slowly inching forward to achieve the goal of having a "600 Ship Navy." This was a Reagan administration goal and we would have achieved it if Soviet General Secretary Gorbachev had not begun to show signs of ending the Cold War and making our 600 Ship Fleet a lesser priority. I worked on a NAVSEASYSCOM project as a subcontractor briefly with Life Cycle Engineering after my retirement from the Navy. Continue to pray for those directly affected by this tragedy. I know that there are many heavy hearts tonight, but I know our God is the healer of heavy hearts.
