Rep. Curbelo Calls for Release of Leopoldo Lopez

Statement

Date: Feb. 18, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the unjust imprisonment of Leopoldo Lopez. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) released the following statement calling for his release.

"It is utterly deplorable that Leopoldo Lopez, an activist fighting for human rights for the people of Venezuela, has been imprisoned by the Maduro regime for two years. It is abundantly clear that this regime has deep harbored contempt for fundamental civil liberties. Lopez's imprisonment is a slap to the Venezuelan people who recently voted to reign in Maduro's lurch towards totalitarianism during their elections this past December. I stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and call for the immediate release of Lopez and all wrongfully imprisoned activists who are champions for democracy."
