Rep. Ted Deutch Issues Statement on Resignation of Speaker John Boehner

Statement

Date: Sept. 25, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21) issued the following statement regarding the announcement that Speaker John Boehner will resign from the House of Representatives at the end of October:

"I thank Speaker Boehner for his service to the House and the country, and I know that he made this decision out of genuine concern for Congress as an institution.

"Yet I am far less certain that his resignation will end the dysfunction that has plagued the Republican majority. Letting a small faction set the agenda of the entire House led to the first-ever downgrade of our nation's credit rating, an embarrassing government shutdown, and the demise of major economic and bipartisan initiatives like comprehensive immigration reform.

"In recent years, Congress has only been able to get anything done when Speaker Boehner sought out votes from Democratic and Republican colleagues alike. I can only hope that our next Speaker recognizes that the House of Representatives works best when it is governed by a majority of its members, not a majority of one party."
