The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, today announced it is honoring U.S. Rep. John A. Culberson (R-Texas) as NSSF's 2015 Legislator of the Year. The award will be officially presented this spring at the organization's annual dinner in Washington, D.C., during the firearms industry's annual Congressional Fly-In.

"We are pleased to recognize Congressman Culberson for his outstanding leadership in the U. S. House of Representatives and on the appropriations subcommittee he chairs in resolving the troublesome "green-tip" ammunition matter and are honored to present him with the 2015 NSSF's Legislator of the Year Award," said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel.

Congressman Culberson played a pivotal leadership role in convincing senior management of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to forestall the effort to introduce a new regulatory framework that would have banned the manufacturing and sale of 5.56 mm M855 "green tip" ammunition. This popular ammunition is widely used by law-abiding Americans for target shooting and hunting.

As chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science that oversees ATF funding, summoned senior bureau officials to Capitol Hill to express his serious concerns the proposed ban would have affected Americans' Second Amendment rights and enjoyment of lawful sporting activities.

"I am honored to receive this prestigious recognition from one of the strongest defenders of our second amendment rights in America today," Culberson said. "Those of us who take on big government liberals and gun control extremists are fighting for deeply-held principles, and it is a joy to work with leading organizations like the NSSF that share our determination to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution from the insidious efforts of this administration to undermine it."
