Murphy Statement On TPP Trade Deal

Today, U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) released the following statement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal:

"While we are still awaiting the final deal text, the details we do know so far are disappointing. I have consistently said that I would oppose any trade deal that does not meet strict labor and environmental standards. Sadly, from what we are hearing, the TPP falls short.

"With a level playing field, Florida workers and businesses can win against any foreign competition. However, bad trade deals ship jobs overseas and make it harder for America to remain competitive. Our workers are demanding fair trade or no deal.

"Furthermore, the deal represents a missed opportunity to engage other nations to tackle currency manipulation and climate change, and the recently passed TPA prevents Congress from amending the deal to address these very serious concerns. For these reasons, I do not believe the TPP meets the bar I have set, and I am not in favor."
