Rep. Barton on Syrian Refugee Legislation: "This is A Beginning, Not an End"

Statement

Date: Nov. 19, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) issued the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 4038, the SAFE Act.

"Today, the House passed The American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act (SAFE Act), an important first step in protecting American lives. The SAFE act requires certified background checks and constitutes an effective halt for Syrian and Iraqi refugees attempting to enter the United States.

"This is a beginning, not an end to the refugee crisis that was highlighted by the tragedy in Paris last Friday. I think this bill strikes a middle ground until we reach a more comprehensive legislative package.

"We must focus on our primary responsibility- to protect Americans. ISIS has declared war against us and they are using all means available to weaken our resolve. We must destroy their military and terror-making capabilities and I urge the President to take up an aggressive strategy to combat this evil."
