Congresswoman Corrine Brown Votes against Republican Bill to Attack Health Care of Women and Working Families

Statement

Date: Jan. 21, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Corrine Brown voted against a Republican bill that would dismantle the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood. This Republican Reconciliation bill would take away affordable health coverage from 22 million Americans, and strip away family planning services and life-saving cancer screenings from millions of women across the country.

"House Republicans have chosen to celebrate the New Year with the same old radical attacks on women's access to health care and on working families with affordable health insurance," said Congresswoman Brown. "Instead of going after Planned Parenthood and attempting to dismantle the affordable health coverage of 22 million Americans, Congress should be working to create jobs and deliver bigger paychecks to hard-working Americans."

The Republican Reconciliation bill, which passed the House with Democrats opposing:

Defunds Planned Parenthood, leaving millions of American women without key preventive health services -- including life-saving cancer screenings, well-woman exams, birth control and advice on family planning; and

Destroys the Affordable Care Act, dismantling the newfound health and economic security of millions of working families.

According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the Republican Reconciliation bill will take away health insurance from 22 million Americans after 2017.

With this bill, House Republicans have now voted 62 times to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act. In addition, the House GOP has now voted 11 times in the 114th Congress alone to disrupt women's access to affordable health care.

In my congressional district, Florida's 5th:

10,000 young adults now have health insurance through their parents' plans.

114,000 seniors in the district received prescription drug discounts.

133,000 individuals in the district -- including 27,000 children and 58,000 women -- now have health insurance that covers preventive services without any co-pays, coinsurance or deductible.

Up to 159,000 individuals in the district now have access to quality, affordable coverage without fear of discrimination or higher rates because of a pre-existing health condition.

"In the New Year, Americans are clamoring for action from Congress to grow the economy, create jobs and improve the lives of working families," continued Rep. Brown. "House Republicans need to end their attacks on the health care of women and working families immediately, and instead work across party lines to make 2016 a year of progress for the American people."
