Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, released the following statement in support of H.R. 4629, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 that was introduced today. Farr is an original cosponsor of the legislation to prevent gun violence by prohibiting the sale, transfer, production and importation of new military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines:

"Military-style weapons designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible have no place in our communities. Since the last assault weapons ban expired, we have watched a steady stream of news reports about one town after another torn apart by gun violence. At the center of almost every one of those mass shootings was an assault weapon that should not have been allowed in the hands of a killer.

"The commonsense proposals in this bill would place new restrictions on the sale of some of the most dangerous weapons and high-capacity guns. It would also close the "Charleston loophole" that allows gun dealers to sell a gun to any individual if a background check is not completed in three days.

"Assault weapons are used in the majority of mass shootings in the United States. Congress has a moral obligation to act to save American lives. I am proud to cosponsor these reasonable gun safety measures to prevent another mass shooter from getting hold of a dangerous assault weapon."
