Heller Amendment to Repeal Cadillac Tax Passes Senate

Press Release

Date: Dec. 3, 2015
Location: Washington D.C.

U.S. Senator Dean Heller's (R-NV) amendment to fully repeal the "Cadillac Tax" passed the Senate today by a vote of 90-10. This amendment reflects the same goal as S. 2045, the Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2015, the only bipartisan piece of legislation to fully repeal this onerous tax.

"Today, the Senate spoke overwhelmingly in favor of repealing the Cadillac Tax. The Cadillac Tax is causing 151 million workers nationwide to lose the health insurance they like. It is causing families to lose their doctor, costs to skyrocket, taking more money out of the hands of middle class Americans. I'm proud my colleagues stood with me in a bipartisan manner to bring relief to hardworking Americans across Nevada and the rest of the country," said Senator Dean Heller.

Background:
In September, Senators Heller and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) introduced S. 2045, which fully repeals the Affordable Care Act's Cadillac Tax. The two Senators introduced this Senate companion to Congressman Courtney's House legislation. Beginning in 2018, the Cadillac Tax will tax employers whose health insurance plans cost more than $10,200 a year for individuals and $27,450 a year for families at 40 percent of the cost above those limits. In Nevada alone, 1.3 million workers who have employer-sponsored health insurance plans will be hit by this tax.
