U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today issued the following statement after members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a discharge petition -- a rare parliamentary move requiring 218 members of the House to force a vote -- to save the Export-Import Bank.

"Today the House of Representatives came together in overwhelming bipartisan support of saving the Export-Import Bank -- an institution that has worked for decades to level the playing field for small businesses, helping them to grow jobs and our economy," said Heitkamp. "It's now unmistakably clear that Congress is united across party lines to reauthorize the Bank, and we have the votes to do it. This summer, the vast majority of the Senate passed the bipartisan Kirk-Heitkamp bipartisan bill to keep this federal agency running. We need to build on this momentum to reauthorize an agency that for 81 years has boosted American competitiveness at no cost to taxpayers. Let's bring this non-controversial bill up for a vote in the Senate again so the Export-Import Bank can continue its valuable work of growing and maintaining jobs here at home."
