Messer Marks 43rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Press Release

Date: Jan. 22, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. Since that decision to legalize abortion in 1973, nearly 58 million children have been aborted and denied their right to life.

"That's a devastating statistic," said Congressman Luke Messer (IN-06). "As we mark this somber anniversary, we should all take a moment to think about those children and the God-given potential each and every one of them had."

Congressman Messer is a longtime defender of pro-life policies and has worked tirelessly to ensure that no taxpayer dollars are ever used to carry out abortions. Some of the pro-life bills he has supported and/or voted for during the 114th Congress are listed below:

Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 (H.R. 3134)--This bill prohibits any Federal funds from being funneled to Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.

Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36)--This legislation prohibits abortions after the 20 weeks fetal age--the time at which it has been scientifically proven that an unborn child can feel pain. It would also punish abortionists who knowingly perform an abortion 20 weeks post-fertilization with up to five years in jail.

Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 3504)--This bill provides legal protection for babies born alive during an attempted abortion. It requires these children receive the same medical care as any other child born alive at the same gestational age.

"Every human life is precious," said Rep. Messer. "And, each year, this anniversary is a reminder to recommit ourselves to defending every child's right to life. I am committed to that fight and will continue to work to protect those who cannot protect themselves."
