Rehberg Announces Bill to Guarantee Continued Amtrak Service Across Montana
June 2, 2005

WHITEFISH, MT - In an effort to continue Empire Builder passenger train service across the state, Montana's Congressman, Denny Rehberg (R), has announced legislation that will set aside $2 billion for Amtrak over each of the next three years.

"These are funds needed to continue Amtrak and to keep the trains rolling across northern Montana. In exchange, we'll be looking to see that Amtrak improves its service and operates with greater efficiency," Rehberg explained. "The federal government provides highways, transit and infrastructure at far greater costs. Washington also has a duty to provide train service to rural passengers.

The Amtrak Reauthorization Act of 2005 (H.R, 1630) would authorize $2 billion be set aside for each of the fiscal years 2006 through 2008, to cover Amtrak operating expenses and various capital expenditures.
