McCarthy, Congressional Leaders Tell Administration to Follow the Visa Waiver Program Law

Statement

Date: Dec. 23, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Kevin McCarthy released the following statement on a letter sent by Congressional leaders urging the Administration to follow the new visa waiver program law in regards to Iran:

"As I have stated before, Secretary Kerry's concerning letter to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif implying that the Administration could choose to exempt those who travel to and from Iran from the new visa waiver program requirements goes against Congress's express intent and the spirit of the law.

"The Administration was an active participant in discussions when Congress drafted the visa waiver program legislation and it knows full well that those who travel to and from Iran cannot be granted a blanket exception from the law. Several House chairmen and I sent a letter to Secretaries Kerry and Johnson underscoring the meaning of the law and Congress's concern over Secretary Kerry's letter. There is no ambiguity. The Administration should follow the law as written and agreed to."
