Speaker Ryan Commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Statement

Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of peaceful reform:

"Today, the people's House joins with Americans across the country in honoring the great Martin Luther King, Jr.

"From the halls of Ebenezer Baptist Church, to the streets of Birmingham, Alabama, to the steps of the Lincoln memorial, Dr. King spent all his life spreading what he called 'the gospel of freedom.'

"Not everyone wanted to hear that good news. He faced fierce opposition. But he never gave up. And he never preached hate.

"He called for peaceful protest. He called for America to live up to its promise--to make all Americans free and equal. His words--and his example--inspire us now.

"And so today we celebrate a great American. We follow in his footsteps by giving back to the community. And we honor his legacy by doing all that we can, every day, to make America more united, happy, and free."
