Rep. Jenkins: Iran Deal Threatens U.S., Allies

U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement after voting no today on the Iran deal:

"The Iran nuclear agreement is bad for our nation, threatens our allies, and sets a dangerous precedent for future negotiations with rogue nations. The administration's agreement has been cloaked in secrecy. Allowing Iran in any way to obtain a nuclear weapon would endanger our national security and the security of our allies in the region, and this administration has failed to protect the world from the threat of a nuclear Iran," Rep. Jenkins said.

"The Iran deal would pull back decades-long sanctions on Iran, giving Iran as much as $150 billion in sanctions relief. Lifting sanctions on Iran poses a clear threat to America and its allies -- even the Obama administration acknowledges that this money could be used to fund terrorist groups throughout the Middle East. I voted yes to suspend the president's authority to waive and suspend sanctions on Iran's nuclear program until January 2017. We must continue using sanctions to rein in Iran's nuclear program and to negotiate a better deal, one where Iran does not and cannot get a nuclear weapon."

H.R. 3461, To Approve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed at Vienna on July 14, 2015, failed by a vote of 162-269.

H.R. 3460, to suspend until Jan. 21, 2017, the authority of the president to waive, suspend, reduce, provide relief from, or otherwise limit the application of sanctions pursuant to an agreement related to the nuclear program of Iran, passed by a vote of 247-186.
