McKinley Statement on Pope Francis' Historic Speech to Congress

Statement

Date: Sept. 24, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Religion

Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) released the following statement following the speech by Pope Francis to a Joint Session of Congress:

"It was an honor to be part of such a historic occasion as a Pope addressed Congress for the first time in history. Pope Francis' message was timely given the challenges we face in Washington. While the Pope touched on several themes, I was most struck by his acknowledgement of the exceptional nature of our nation and its history. He began on a high note by referring to the "land of the free, home of the brave' and referred to figures like Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. who relied on faith to do great things. It was an inspiring message and humbling to be a part of this event."
