Issue Position: Abortion

Issue Position

Human life is a gift that should be cherished and protected. I believe that we, as a nation, should do everything in our power to preserve it. In 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that a woman's right to have an abortion is constitutionally protected. I strongly disagree with this ruling.

Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have and will continue to support efforts to preserve the lives of unborn children. I strongly believe that it is our moral and ethical duty to protect the dignity of human life, particularly when it comes to the lives of the most vulnerable members of our society.

In addition, I believe that it is wholly irresponsible for the federal government to use any taxpayer dollars to make abortions more accessible. That is why I am a proud cosponsor of S.582, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." This bill would create a permanent, government-wide prohibition of taxpayer funding for abortion. In addition, I am also a cosponsor of S. 1553, the "Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act." S. 1553 would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks with the exception of saving the mother's life or in the event of rape or incest. Throughout the 114th Congress, I will continue to support measures that protect the unborn and limit federal funding for abortions.

Planned Parenthood

Like many Alabamians, I have grave concerns regarding the videos revealing Planned Parenthood's abortion practices and find the footage extremely disturbing. The videos raise a number of policy and ethical concerns, including whether Planned Parenthood is in compliance with federal law. For these reasons, I am proud to cosponsor S. 1881. This bill would defund Planned Parenthood and prohibits all federal funding to it or any of its affiliates. Furthermore, S. 1881 also ensures the preservation of federal funding for women's health care services through eligible and responsible providers.
