GOP Seeks to End Health Insurance and Preventative Services for Millions of Americans

In response to efforts by House Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood through a reconciliation bill, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) issued the following statement:

"Rather than starting the New Year with new bipartisan initiatives to create jobs and move our economy forward, House Republicans have once again decided to pursue the same partisan fights from the year before. Their efforts not only compromise the health care of millions of families across the country, but also represent an outright refusal to pursue sensible legislation with their colleagues across the aisle.

"Today marks the 62nd time House Republicans have voted to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act. Despite knowing that such a move is futile and will be undoubtedly vetoed by President Obama, conservatives remain undeterred in pursuing this flawed, partisan strategy. Adding insult to injury, Republicans have failed to present any viable alternatives as to how they can help American families gain access to vital, life-saving care.

"House Republicans have also recommitted themselves to mean-spirited and dangerous attacks on women's health care by defunding Planned Parenthood for one year. Most women who access care from a family planning center use Planned Parenthood as their main source of health care, and most Planned Parenthood visitors have incomes of 150% of the federal poverty levels or less. I can only hope that this exercise in partisan politics is not an indication of what's to come for this year in Congress.

"These heartless attempts could end health insurance for millions and roll back preventative healthcare services for vulnerable American men and women. Let's get to work on the business that the American people sent us here to do -- which is to effectively govern and address the problems facing our nation."
