Governor Hassan's Statement on REAL ID Legislation

Statement

Following the announcement that House Speaker Pro Tem Sherman Packard has filed legislation to address New Hampshire's compliance with the federal REAL ID law, Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement:

"Earlier this year, I supported legislation that would have given Granite Staters the option to obtain identification that would be compliant with federal requirements for acceptance in certain facilities. The legislature unfortunately did not support that common-sense measure, and we have recently seen increasing concern that New Hampshire licenses will not be accepted for travel at airports and other secure federal facilities in the near future.

"Failing to offer a compliant New Hampshire identification option is an undue burden on our people and businesses, and I am glad that the legislature has expressed its desire to address this issue in the next session. I look forward to working with legislators from both parties on a common-sense solution that will continue to ensure that New Hampshire retains control of its data and will continue to protect the private information of our citizens while also not requiring Granite Staters to obtain a federal passport in order to enter secure facilities or to travel on airplanes."
