Vitter Introduces Bill Empowering States To Deny Funds For Abortion Mills

Press Release

Today, U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) introduced the Women's Health and Public Safety Act, which would provide greater flexibility for states to exclude abortion providers from receiving Medicaid funding.

"States should certainly have control over where these taxpayer dollars go, and that includes choosing to fund or not fund abortion mills -- like Planned Parenthood," said Vitter. "My legislation takes us one step closer to protecting the lives of innocent, vulnerable babies from monstrous abortion mills in a way that gives states the flexibility to decide what works best for them."

Vitter's legislation would grant more power to states by increasing their flexibility to determine the participation of providers who perform abortions in Medicaid. Special exceptions would be permitted if the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest, or in the event that the mother's life is at-risk.

In recent weeks, Vitter has voted three times against funding Planned Parenthood after footage emerged exposing the taxpayer-funded group's practice of harvesting and selling organs of unborn babies -- a practice of which senior executives of the organization were aware. Vitter has been a consistent advocate for the sanctity of human life in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, earning a 100% pro-life voting record from the National Right to Life Committee.
