Vitter: Planned Parenthood Announcement is Political Ploy

Press Release

Date: Oct. 13, 2015
Location: Metairie, LA

Today, U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding Planned Parenthood Federation of America's announcement that they will no longer accept monetary payments for harvesting fetal tissue as part of their abortion services. Planned Parenthood will continue the practice of harvesting and donating fetal tissue.

"It's reprehensible that any organization would actualize the practice of pawning babies' body parts, and today's announcement is just a political ploy to make justifiably outraged and disgusted Americans forget what Planned Parenthood is doing. But there is no doubt they will continue to harvest fetal tissue," said Vitter. "Planned Parenthood and all abortion mills deserve to be prosecuted and stripped of American taxpayer funding, and I will not rest until they do."

In July, Vitter joined 49 other Senators in sending a letter to Sylvia Burwell, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), after footage surfaced exposing Planned Parenthood's practice of harvesting and selling organs of unborn babies, a practice of which senior executives were aware. In the letter, the Senators urged HHS to cooperate with ongoing and future investigations into the legal, ethical, and policy issues raised by the footage. In recent weeks, Vitter has voted three times against funding Planned Parenthood.

Last week, Vitter introduced the Women's Health and Public Safety Act, which would provide greater flexibility for states to exclude abortion providers from receiving Medicaid funding.

Vitter has been a consistent advocate for the sanctity of human life in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, earning a 100% pro-life voting record from the National Right to Life Committee. Click here to read more.
