Cyber Week Readout

Press Release

Date: Sept. 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the House Armed Services Committee wrapped up "Cyber Week," a detailed and focused look at the Department of Defense's cyber strategy, capabilities, and vulnerabilities. Committee Members participated in two, open unclassified hearings with experts from industry, and representatives from the Department of Defense. Members also participated in a closed classified brief with Department of Defense officials that outlined cyber operations and capabilities.

Chairman Thornberry noted:

"Cyber is deeply ingrained in virtually every facet of our daily lives--at work, in our homes, in our schools, and in government. While cyber is a great enabler, the threats associated with it also pose a significant danger to our national security.

"This week, we learned that we are getting better at protecting our networks, but not fast enough. It is clear that the challenges and risks are not going away; rather, the threats grow more complex and more serious daily. We must remain focused on this critical issue, and I intend to make sure the Department of Defense has the resources and authorities it needs to improve our cyber capabilities as quickly as possible."

Chairman Wilson noted:

"I was encouraged to hear that we have made improvements in cyber readiness and cyber defenses, but much work remains to be done. Cyber is a new domain of warfare and recent cyber attacks are a sober reminder that Congress, and all government agencies, need to work together better to improve the protection of all networks, both government and commercial."

"We must ensure we are doing everything we can to enhance our cyber capabilities, including a comprehensive cyber defense and deterrence system."
