Van Hollen Statement on Republican "Pay China First' Act

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Republican "Pay China First' Act:

"Today's vote was a blatant attempt by Republicans to confuse the American people and avoid blame if they fail to prevent an avoidable catastrophic default. It is indicative of the priorities of Washington Republicans these days -- putting China ahead of our troops, veterans, and the full faith and credit of the American people. Instead of acting to prevent an economic crisis, the bill Republicans passed today would actually create one. It would allow Treasury to repay existing bond holders, including China and other foreign creditors, while ignoring other legally required payments. Fortunately, neither the Senate nor the President will go along with this scheme.

"Republicans need to stop playing risky political games and immediately pass a clean debt limit bill."
