Vela Announces $1.2M for Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport from FAA for Terminal Replacement Project

U.S. Representative Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, announced today that the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport received $1.2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration. The funds will be used for phase two of the terminal replacement project.

"The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport is an important economic hub for our region," U.S. Rep. Vela said. "As the City of Brownsville and the airport prepare for the terminal expansion, I will continue working with the FAA and the Department of Transportation to ensure more federal funds are allocated for this project. The expansion of the airport's terminal will create more jobs, grow our airport, accommodate more visitors to the area, and fuel our economy."

The City of Brownsville and the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport are working on the terminal expansion.

"This award comes at a pivotal point in time for the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport," said Sesha Vorrey, interim aviation director, Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

"We are experiencing record growth and are boarding more passengers than ever in our 86-year history," he said. "These funds will ensure the Airport sustains its top safety record and continues to serve passengers with its award-winning customer service. Funds will be used towards a new terminal and expansion of the Air Operations Area (AOA) to accommodate the Airport's fast-growing passenger volume. The entire Airport staff thanks Congressman Vela for his continued support."
