ongressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement for Women's Equality Day, a day that recognizes the ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote in America:

"Ninety-five years ago, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting American women the right to vote. Today we commemorate the historic event in celebrating Women's Equality Day, when we not only pay tribute to those who fought for women's suffrage, but also reflect upon what more needs to be done to achieve equality in America.

I marched with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, and understand the importance of fighting for voting rights and the power of the ballot in giving voice to the people. This year signals a huge milestone as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which eliminated many barriers for African Americans to vote. While we take pride in the change we have seen in almost a century's time, we are reminded we still have much work to do to eradicate all forms of discrimination and inequality. Today, full-time working women earn only 78 cents for every dollar a man earns. In the government, there are only 108 Congresswoman out of 541. We need to make sure those who work for the people reflect our country's diversity. When more women become involved in politics, we can close the gender gap and move forward as a nation.

For our nation to reach its full potential, we must ensure our commitment to equality. America owes her strength to the dedication and hard work of our mothers, sisters and daughters. I will continue to advocate for equality for everyone in America so we as a nation can move towards greater prosperity. Let us remember: When women succeed, America succeeds."
