Rangel Marks 80th Anniversary of Social Security

Press Release

"Social Security has been and remains a powerful safety net for many Americans, not just the most vulnerable among us. As we celebrate its 80th anniversary, I am committed to ensure that Social Security continues to fulfill its promise for generations to come.

The scope of Social Security's impact extends beyond that as a lifeline for seniors, with 90 percent of Americans aged 65 and over relying on it as their main source of income. Workers with disability and households affected by the loss of a family member may also benefit. Today, one in five Americans count on Social Security to make ends meet.

I proudly co-sponsored the One Social Security Act (H.R. 3150), which will prevent cuts to Social Security, because hardworking Americans rightly deserve a comfortable retirement and should be able to provide for their families in unforeseen circumstances. I will keep fighting to protect this invaluable program that helps secure the livelihoods of millions of Americans."
