Walker Statement Regarding Justice Department's Overreach in Alamance County

Statement

Date: Oct. 6, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Legal

The U.S. Department of Justice investigated action against Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson alleging that he engaged in discriminatory law enforcement activities. On August 7, 2015, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina denied the claims of the United States and dismissed its complaint. The Department of Justice has now appealed this ruling.

In response, U.S. Representative Mark Walker (NC-06) issued the following statement:

"I am disappointed that the Department of Justice is seeking to continue this difficult chapter for the people of Alamance County and the Alamance County Sheriff's Department. Through its use of sue-and-settle polices to intimidate entities that do not comply with the president's political goals, President Obama and the Obama Administration have politicized the Department of Justice.

As a member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, I have continued to witness as the Obama Administration and the Justice Department overstep its boundaries. We have seen the DOJ's mishandling of Fast and Furious; its refusal to enforce laws that are inconsistent with President Obama's beliefs; and DOJ's failure to provide the information needed to fulfill Congress' constitutionally-provided oversight mandate.

As we move into the final days of the Obama Administration, these cases should remind Congress and the American people of the necessity of reigning in this Administrations' lawlessness."
