Graves Issues Statement on HASC Cybersecurity Hearing

Statement

Date: Oct. 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Sam Graves issued the following statement after today's House Armed Services Committee (HASC) hearing on national cybersecurity. Graves submitted remarks for the hearing, titled "Outside Perspectives on the Department of Defense Cyber Strategy."

"In a rapidly evolving world, the national security threats we face today are different than ever before," Rep. Graves said. "While more of our attention is rightfully being placed on cybersecurity, we are still not where we need to be. DoD must make it a priority to ensure this country is protected against the dangerous and ever-present threat of cyberterrorism."

This past April, the Department of Defense (DoD) released a report titled, "Strategy for Cyberspace," which was the focus of today's hearing. The report defines the role DoD must play in protecting American interests against cyberwarfare, including cooperation between the American military and the private sector. "Strategy for Cyberspace" serves as a blueprint for DoD's cybersecurity strategy.

The hearing comes after the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) hack earlier this year, which compromised millions of Americans' private information.
