Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Michigan Republican Party's Attempts to Politicize Amir Hekmati

Statement

Date: Sept. 11, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after the Michigan Republican Party sought to politicize and fundraise off of Amir Hekmati's continued captivity in Iran:

"People can have honest disagreements over the Iran nuclear agreement, but to politicize and try to fundraise off of U.S. Marine veteran Amir Hekmati's continued captivity is disgraceful. Amir Hekmati's case should be above politics -- not reduced to a cheap political stunt. Democrats and Republicans have rallied behind Amir and his family; Congress unanimously passed a resolution calling for his release, demonstrating that Amir and the other American political prisoners are above partisanship.

"The Michigan Republican Party should be ashamed for attempting to exploit Amir's case for its own political gain."
