Deadline for Michiganders to Submit Comments to Canadian Ministry of Environment on Proposal Is Tonight

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today submitted his own public comments to the Canadian Minister of the Environment in opposition to Canada's plan to bury nuclear waste less than a mile from the Great Lakes. A copy of Congressman Kildee's comments to Minister Leona Aglukkaq can be found here.

Last month, Congressman Kildee announced a community initiative asking Michiganders to write in during an ongoing public comment period on the issue. Since then, constituents and advocacy organizations have submitted comments, including the Great Lakes Regional Alliance, which is comprised of 48 board members who represent Bay, Isabella, Midland and Saginaw counties. Today is the final day of the 90-day comment period. Instructions for those still wishing to submit comments can be viewed here.

"Simply, the Great Lakes would be forever changed if they were contaminated with nuclear waste. Thus, it is troubling that Ontario Power Generation has failed to consider any other potential sites to store nuclear waste. Surely in the vast land mass that comprises Canada, there must be a better place to bury radioactive material than sixth-tenths of a mile from the Great Lakes," Congressman Kildee wrote in his public comments.

Today's action by Congressman Kildee is the latest in recent weeks to raise awareness about the potential Canadian plan and stop the burying of nuclear waste so close to the Great Lakes.
