Today, Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) expressed his support for the key issues Pope Francis spoke about in his address before a Joint Session of Congress.

"I would like to thank Pope Francis for coming to speak to Congress today. His historic address underscored the fact that he is committed to finding solutions for some of the most pressing issues of our time. During his speech, the Pope stressed that now is the time for courageous action and that is exactly what I think is needed to spark the greater dialogue to address these global issues," Takai said.

Today's address marked the first time a Pope has ever addressed a Joint Session of Congress. Following his address, Pope Francis spoke to the over 40,000 people who gathered outside of the U.S. Capitol to watch his address to Congress.

"His Holiness called on Members of Congress to remember their responsibility to care for the most vulnerable among us, to exercise compassion for those who come to our shores seeking the American dream, and the importance of acting as responsible stewards of our earth. His words resonate with those who have chosen the path of service and serve as a moral compass as we work to improve the lives of all Americans," Takai concluded.

Pope Francis is on a six-day visit to the United States. On Wednesday, Pope Francis addressed the President and invited guests at the White House. He will travel to New York and Philadelphia later in the week before concluding his trip on Sunday.

A few days ago, Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) was featured in a video produced by the House Democratic Caucus thanking Pope Francis for his leadership on combatting and reversing climate change, an issue of great importance to the Democratic Party platform.
