Capitol Corner: Protecting Religious Freedom

Statement

Date: Sept. 22, 2015
Issues: Religion

In recent years, religious liberty and traditional Christian values have come under attack. The federal government has invaded our homes to redefine the core family unit. Businesses, churches and families are being pressured to conform to politically correct ideas and give up their moral values. Religious freedom is being smothered by a government that has grown too large and invasive. It is about time that we stand up for our beliefs.

Our nation was founded upon the principle that religious individuals are free to worship without fear of persecution from the federal government. Following the Supreme Court's judicial activism allowing same-sex marriage in July, private businesses, charities, universities, and churches are operating in fear of financial penalties and discrimination based on their religious beliefs. The fear of these religious entities is exactly the reason why I'm a cosponsor of H.R. 2802, the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA). FADA provides protection for religious liberty at the federal level and makes sure that no organization is forced to violate their faith in regards to human sexuality. FADA protects for profit and non-profits for being penalized for their moral convictions and ensures their First Amendment rights are upheld without fear of the IRS stripping them of their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. In addition, FADA protects individuals or organizations that believe in natural marriage from discrimination in employment, grants, contracts, tax treatment and other programs.

While FADA is a solution to a federal issue, the moral battle we face continues. As Christians, we must defend our faith and ensure that our communities speak out against injustices and prejudice. We the People must ensure that religious liberty remains a fundamental right in our nation -- just as our forefathers intended -- and that no liberal judicial or executive branch infringes on that right.
