Congresswoman Duckworth announces two HHS Grant recipients in Illinois' 8th District

Statement

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded grants to the Greater Elgin Family Care Center and the Hamdard Center for Health and Human Services in Illinois' 8th congressional district. The Greater Elgin Family Care Center received $367,464 to hire two physicians and support staff, increasing the center's overall capacity to serve patients; and the Hamdard Center for Health and Human Services received a $240,626 award to hire an additional half-time physician and support staff.

Opened in 2001, the Greater Elgin Family Care Center aims to provide comprehensive, quality and affordable healthcare services to all, regardless of a patient's ability to pay. The Center offers medical, dental, and psychiatric behavioral healthcare services.

The Hamdard Center is a primary and behavioral healthcare services provider to largely-underserved immigrant populations in the greater Chicago-area. It was established in 1992 by Dr. Farzana Hamid and Dr. Mohammad Hamid to respond to the health needs of South Asian and Middle Eastern communities through culturally-sensitive and linguistically-appropriate services. The Hamdard Center has offices in Skokie, Addison, and in Chicago.

Congresswoman Duckworth has made it a priority to increase access to quality, affordable healthcare for all people. Healthcare providers like the Elgin and Hamdard Centers are an integral part of this mission.

"These organizations have provided important comprehensive healthcare services to underserved populations in and around Illinois' 8th district," Congresswoman Duckworth said. "In many circumstances, low-income and immigrant communities do not have access to quality health services. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the continued dedication of these centers, and their commitment to solving this growing problem. They provide much-needed healthcare."
