Fortenberry to Vote "No' on Iran Agreement

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) today issued the following statement on the Iran agreement:

"After significant analysis and careful consideration, I cannot in good conscience give the Iranian nuclear agreement my full assent. I will vote no. This is one of the most consequential decisions any Member of Congress will make.

"With an agreement this significant, it was important to have adequate space for frank deliberation and public interaction. While the agreement provides a level of constraint on Iran's nuclear weapons program, it confers legitimacy on their nuclear threshold status, an unprecedented shift for a country with so many entanglements. I was also deeply disturbed by the lifting of the weapons and ballistic missile technology embargoes on Iran, a last minute addition to the agreement.

"It is important to note that the agreement is an earnest attempt by the Administration to halt Iran's nuclear weapons program -- but there are significant downside risks.

"I am grateful for the significant input and thoughtful commentary I've received from the citizens of our state."
