Ellmers Removes Regulatory Barriers for Primate Sanctuaries

Press Release

Date: July 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-02) released the following statement after introducing H.R. 3294 --the Sanctuary Regulatory Fairness Act of 2015:

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-02):

"Today I re-introduced Sanctuary Regulatory Fairness Act, which would allow qualified sanctuaries to import primates who are in need of a home and have no other alternatives."

"This legislation has zero-cost and merely allows the private sector the opportunity to import primates under strict guidelines and provide them the humane care they would not receive otherwise. It only stands to reason that if zoos are allowed to import these primates, sanctuaries should be allowed to do the same. I look forward to working with my colleagues, including Senator Cassidy and Congressman DeFazio, to advance this bill."

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA):

"Animal sanctuaries help animals who might have been in danger, or hurt, live longer lives. By updating outdated regulations, more animals can come to sanctuaries and live in peace."
