View from the Capitol - Congresswoman Hartzler's Weekly Newsletter for the Week of August 24, 2015

Statement

A major theme this week was Executive overregulation. As I travel around our district, I continue to hear about how the EPA's rules are leading to job loss and plant closures, or how the Obama Administration is making it more and more difficult to hire and grow.

I met with Barton County officials in Lamar this week to discuss issues facing Barton County. They are making great efforts to spur growth and bring additional employers into the county, but they continue to express concern with the rapid rate at which coal plants are closing and the constant overreach from the Obama Administration, which is hampering economic development at the local levels. This is getting out of hand and I will continue my efforts to rein in Washington's top-down, one-size-fits-all policies and restore power at the state and local level--where it belongs.

I also met with Mayor Kent Harris and city officials while in Lamar. Though he faces many of the same obstacles from Washington, Mayor Harris has instituted an outreach program aimed at serving the city's businesses and making Lamar more business-friendly. He has truly hit the ground running and I wish him continued success as he works to bring prosperity to the city.

I also had the opportunity to have lunch with staff members from the Nevada Regional Medical Center this week. They have done well to continue delivering quality care to area residents, despite the harm that has come from sequestration, flailing Medicare reimbursements, and the rising costs brought on by Obamacare. I was great to hear from staff on the front line as well as CEO Kevin Leeper, and I commend them for what they do for our Fourth District friends and neighbors.

I capped off the week with another presentation on the President's Iran Nuclear Deal. I was pleased to have about 60 residents join me in Sedalia to learn more about this deal and some of the factors behind it. As I have continued to say, this deal falls far short of the Administration's own objectives and allows Iran to keep its nuclear-weapons-capabilities while giving them billions of dollars to continue their terrorist initiatives across the Middle East. It is a bad deal that jeopardizes Americans and our allies. In addition, I grow more and more concerned as revelations pour out of secret deals with the inspectors, which allows Iran to self-inspect. That is like letting the fox guard the hen house. Who would think that's a good deal? When Congress returns, I expect a vigorous debate on this dangerous agreement before our vote. I will vigorously oppose this deal because it does not keep us or our allies safe. I want to thank State Fair Community College and President Joanna Anderson for allowing us to meet in their wonderful facilities to discuss such a vital topic.
