Thompson Announces U.S. Department of Education Award to Clarion University

Today, U.S. Rep. Glenn "GT' Thompson (PA-05) announced the United States Department of Education has awarded $329,685 to Clarion University through a competitive grant process for the Student Support Services (SSS) Program for Fiscal Year 2015. The award, beginning Sept. 1, is anticipated to continue for five years, totaling $1.6 million.

"We have great universities across the 5th Congressional District taking an active role in providing academic support and services for low-income, first-generation and disabled students," Thompson, who serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, said. "Those involved in securing this funding should be proud of their efforts to ensure students are supported from enrollment though graduation."

"These funds are critical to our ongoing efforts to support success among Clarion University students," said Dr. Karen Whitney, president of Clarion University. "At Clarion we are committed to every student as we prepare them for courageous and confident futures."

The SSS Program at Clarion University will use the funds to support 206 students. Those services include financial aid information, graduate and professional school counseling, personal coaching and other techniques designed to enhance student performance.
