Rep. Matsui Statement on 50th Anniversary of Voting Rights Act

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement commemorating the Voting Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on August 6, 1965.

"Today we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of one of our nation's most important civil rights protections: the Voting Rights Act. Since President Johnson signed this bill into law in 1965, the Voting Rights Act has served to safeguard the right to vote for all Americans by preventing unlawful voting discrimination.

"Two years ago, in the landmark case of Shelby v. Holder, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. This decision undermined our commitment to the fundamental right to vote. Congress must act now to ensure all Americans have full access to the ballot box by renewing and strengthening the Voting Rights Act."
