Hoyer Statement on the 80th Anniversary of Social Security

Statement

Date: Aug. 14, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the 80th anniversary of Social Security, which was signed into law on August 14, 1935:

"Eight decades ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, providing peace of mind to seniors that they would not spend their final years in poverty. A hallmark of the New Deal, it continues to ensure that seniors can live a life of dignity and independence after years of hard work. This vital program has been incredibly successful as a measure of protection both for seniors and for families across America. As we mark its eightieth anniversary, Democrats will continue to protect Social Security and ensure that it stays strong for generations to come."
